Mr. Wilson was born in Los Angeles, raised in the Detroit area, and returned to California as a young man. Before his distinguished college career he dropped out of high school and for 4 years became a professional pool player. His story to that point was of the quintessential misspent youth. When he got married, everything changed. He started to take education more seriously, got back into high school at night and graduated.
Mr. Wilson’s formal education began with two Cum Laude engineering Bachelor degrees from the University of California at Berkeley — one in Mechanical Engineering and one in Materials Science and Engineering. At Berkeley he was awarded the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa distinction. He went on to receive his Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, again with the Cum Laude distinction. He left engineering in 1987 when the layoffs in aerospace caught up to him along with thousands of other professionals.
With 18 years experience in consultative work in financial services, Mr. Wilson has taken his expertise as a valued and trusted advisor and owner of Westlake Capital Management and launched his coaching business — Next Level Coaching. He founded NLC in 2009 to reach out to that person in business in need of a business growth coach. The disciplines and the skill set are not new but the application is new since a transactional platform is absent. Now the client pays out of earnings (perceived or expected) and not from transactional commissions.
Mr. Wilson has been married to Linda for 37 years. They’ve lived in Thousand Oaks, California for 27 years with their four children. He enjoys sailing, is a private pilot, and an accomplished painter. Mr. Wilson sits on the boards of the Salvation Army, The New West Symphony, the Christian Businessmen’s Committee and the Westlakers (a philanthropic organization of local businessmen).
